ASUS Zenbook UX330UA

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA

The aluminum alloy deck of the ZenBook UX330UA is beautiful and modern, and the machine offers a consistent feel that is good for the price. Laptops under $700 were hard to recommend. They were often poorly designed, had low-end components and were filled with significant compromises. But with machines like the Dell XPS 13 and the Swift 5 on the market, there are now a lot of good options in this price range.

Although there are faster laptops on the market and cheaper on shelves in all department stores, the UX330UA is just for most buyers. The processor is fast; the battery lasts all day, the keyboard is excellent, the included features are fantastic for the price, and the design is based on the most high-end laptops on the market, without costing as much. The Asus ZenBook UX330UA is a mid-range model that offers a 13.3-inch display, a unibody aluminum alloy chassis, a wide range of current and future ports and processor options starting with an Intel Core processor i5.

The basic level Asus UX330UA offers almost everything I want in a mid-range notebook. The metal body is light and robust, the 7th generation i5 is not at the forefront (the chips of the 8th generation are being deployed) but it is fast, the battery is big and lasts all day thanks to the necessary tasks and a full HD screen in my Asus book because it usually means you get a more extended battery. The Asus ZenBook UX330UA has been a worthy successor to the UX305UA, and the 8th generation CPU is an excellent addition to the mix. The new processor delivers impressive results and ensures the ZenBook UX330UA remains competitive in 2018.

9.5 Total Score

Acer Swift 3

Acer Swift 5

There is no way to guess the weight of the Swift 3 just by looking at it since it looks like a 14-inch laptop. It is not very thin and is about 14.9 mm thick, thanks to which Acer managed to keep USB ports of standard size. The screen has thin borders on the three of its four sides, and there is just enough space on the top for HD webcam. The screen itself is a 14-inch Full HD IPS panel, which has a glossy finish and also supports touch input. The physical response is also correct, but as this device does not convert fully into a tablet, we rarely end up using it.

Connectivity is also secure. It sports a USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, offering super-nippy transfer speeds. There is an HDMI connection to connect the Swift 5 to a projector, TV or other external display. Rounding up the hardware features is a slim fingerprint sensor. This is placed just under the keyboard, on the right edge. As is now the norm, the Swift 3 sports a chiclet table with private keys. These keys are perfectly spaced so that typists can immediately begin to test crashes and emails at a satisfactory speed, with minimal errors. Stuffed inside the Swift 5 is a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-8250U processor, backed by 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM. Overall, the Swift 3 is well built, and we like how incredibly lightweight it is. You only get one charger in the box, along with warranty documentation and a user manual.

9.4Expert Score

The Acer Aspire 5 shines with its fast and extended drives; clear and crisp display and stylish design but hesitates when it comes to audio and price.

Acer Aspire E 15

Acer Aspire E 15

The Acer Aspire E 15 is just such a laptop, at an aggressive price of $ 600. It includes a 15.6-inch (1920 x 1080 or X PPI) full HD display, a 7th-generation Intel Core i5-7200U processor, a discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX950M GPU, 8 GB of RAM, a DVD-RW drive and 256 GB. SATA Solid State Drive (SSD). The Aspire E 15 is rather simple; it is – black and plastic with shiny silver accents in its Acer logos (found on both sides of its screen) and trims around the touchpad. A brushed texture is engraved in its lid and painted on the keyboard. At 4.9 pounds and 1.2 inches thick, the Acer Aspire E 15 is thicker and more substantial than the Lenovo Flex 5 1570, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 2-in-1 and the Acer Swift 3.

The Acer Aspire E 15 sets offer a lot of connectivity. You’ will get here a USB-C 3.1 Gen1 port (no Thunderbolt 3 support), two USB-A 3.0 ports, a USB-A 2.0 port, a VGA port a full-size HDMI port, an Ethernet connection, and a 3.5mm jack combo audio. The standard 2 and 2 MU-MIMO W-Fi and Bluetooth radios are there to complete the connectivity.

It’s an impressive combination for such a low-end machine and results in performance that rivals much more expensive laptops. The Aspire E 15 has provided excellent processor performance in both synthetic and real-world performance testing, with more than sufficient power to reduce productivity. He maintained not only with his budget siblings, but also contested more expensive options like the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, which had a Core i5-7300HQ.

9.3Expert Score
2nd Runner-up: Acer Aspire E 15 Score: 9.3/10

The Acer Aspire E 15 is good value for money, offering long battery life, lots of ports and solid performance.

HP 2-in-1 Envy x360

HP 2-in-1 Envy x360

The Envy x360 is HP’s 15-inch convertible notebook, which is under the Specter x360, available in sizes 15 and 13 inches. As a convertible, it has a 360-degree hinge that allows you to use it in different modes, such as a tablet, a tent, a stand or just a standard laptop. The typical 15.6-inch IPS LCD 1080p touchscreen features a standard range of configurable hardware: 8GB to 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB to 1TB SSD plus 1TB hard drive and a relatively small battery 55, 8 Wh (later). The processor, in the AMD model at least, is a Ryzen 5 2500U without additional discrete graphics.

The Envy x360 is doing pretty well here, with two Type-A 3.1 USB ports on each side, and a Type-1 type-1 USB 3.1 port. No, it’s not a Thunderbolt 3 port, because Ryzen Mobile does not support Thunderbolt, it does not matter because the Intel variants of this laptop do not include Thunderbolt 3. Other ports include a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI 2.0b full size, a card slot SD, and disappointing a proprietary charge port. The HP Envy x360 is a widescreen laptop ideal for those looking for solid audio and sexy design. Unfortunately, it is held back by its dark and non-stimulating screen, its loose hinges and its low autonomy.

Dell Inspiron i5767

Dell Inspiron i5767-0018GRY

If size matters to you, and what suits you best, the Dell Inspiron i5767-0018GRY can be the right machine for you. Its 17-inch screen is beautifully large, mimicking a desktop screen. Coming in gray or black, the Dell Inspiron i5767-0018GRY maintains the traditional clamshell design. Apart from its 17-inch screen, it also has excellent hardware configuration, including the all-new i5-7200U processor.

The 17.3-inch Full HD screen on this notebook is indeed a precise point that deserves to be considered. If you enjoy watching movies and streaming services, having a big screen makes for a more fun experience when using this laptop. Another positive aspect about this laptop is its 8GB RAM DDR4. It will help your user experience on Windows 10, and DDR4 technology is faster than DDR3. The Dell Inspiron i5767-0018GRY comes with a fair choice of port, although nothing new.

It comes with two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI display port, a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo, and an RJ-45 Ethernet port. A bit of security is also offered with the inclusion of a Kensington lock. It sports the latest Wi-Fi 802.11ac protocol and a Bluetooth 4.2. The 802.11ac wireless is the next generation of Wi-Fi signaling. The DVD player can both read and write multiple formats, and after years of repeated improvements, it is reliable by default. Finally, a 720P HD Webcam with Dual Digital Microphone Array is housed at the top of the screen. The HD display is quite suitable for video conferencing and skyping. Integrated with the Intel HD Graphics 620 which is clocked between 300 and 1000 MHz. Performance wise, it can handle multiple tasks such as word processing, video editing, etc. without much pressure.

PROS:
  • Decent storage option
  • AMD Radeon R7 M445 graphics
  • Full-HD display
  • Backlit keyboard

CONS:
  • Slow hard drive speeds
  • Average battery
  • Non-IPS display

The two-tone design of the Flex 5 is simple yet eye-catching. The plastic cover is black with the silver Lenovo logo in the upper left corner. The opening of the computer reveals a steel-gray aluminum bridge with an island-style keyboard, as well as a 14-inch and 1080p touchscreen. There’s also a chrome accent around the trackpad, the fingerprint reader and the base of the laptop near the keyboard. The chrome is discreet and gives an exquisite touch to the Flex 5.

And, on the right side, you’ll find the power button, the card reader, USB 3.0 and a Kensington lock. Acer Switch Alpha 12

Acer Switch Alpha 12

For the Switch Alpha 12, Acer opted for a 2-in-1 design inspired by the Surface that combines a tablet, a crutch, and a keyboard. The kickstand moves away from the aluminum back of the device, with a brushed pattern and the Acer logo, as well as a 5-megapixel camera. When paired with the keyboard cover, the Switch Alpha 12 dimensions (11.5 x 7.9 x 0.6) inches and the weighs 2.8 pounds. Without this, the dimensions shrink to 2 pounds and 0.4 inches thick. The Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3GHz processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD on our Alpha 12 Switch configuration make it an excellent productivity machine.

Acer, capitalizing on the high-end price of the Surface Pro 4, has created a competing device called the Switch Alpha 12 which is significantly cheaper. With a starting price of $599 which covers a keyboard, the Alpha 12 is a Surface clone that most of us can afford. The screen of the Switch Alpha 12 is slightly smaller than that of the Surface Pro 3, 12 inches against 12.3 inches respectively. The Alpha Switch 12 also has larger frames that are about an inch wide, which is appropriate for holding the tablet without triggering the touchscreen, but they can be a bit of horror compared to bezzled thin devices there -low.

The Alpha 12 switch has the most useful combination of any 12-inch convertible ports we’ve tested. Its right side houses a headphone/mic jack, a USB 3.0 port, a power jack, a USB Type-C port and a microSD card slot. Compare this to the Surface Pro 4’s single USB port or to the Miix 700, which has two USB 3.0 ports, but one of them also serves as a charging socket.

PROS:
  • Useful ports
  • Bright and vivid display
  • Strong overall performance

CONS:
  • Poor battery life
  • Bloatware
  • Lackluster front camera
  • Runs hot

Lenovo Yoga 710

Lenovo Yoga 710

The Lenovo Yoga 710 features a 15.6-inch IPS 10-point FHD (1920 x 1080) touchscreen. The bright and colorful panel is excellent for watching a video, editing pictures or playing games. With a brightness of 322 nits, the Yoga 710 offers flexible viewing angles. The models hold well beyond 70 degrees without loss of color or distortion. Unfortunately, the glossy screen is a little sensitive to light. Featuring a 2.5 GHz Seventh-Generation Intel Core i5-7200U processor, a Nvidia Geforce 940MX GPU (with 2GB of DDR3L), Intel HD Graphics 520, 8GB of DDR4 and a 256GB SSD, the Yoga 710 has excellent performance. Like the adjustable nature of the form factor, the Lenovo Yoga 710 is a jack of all trades in return.

On the right side of the Yoga 710, you will find two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI combo/Display Port, and the power button. And, on the left side of Yoga 710, you’ll find the SD card reader, the power port, and the headphone jack. There is no CD / DVD drive on it, and most laptops remove them anyway. I wish that a USB-C port was added to this and I am sure that Lenovo will add this feature to future laptops as it becomes the new standard. There is a fingerprint scanner near the bottom right corner of the keyboard, and it works brilliantly. It only takes half a second to access your computer when using fingerprint authentication in Windows 10.

PROS:
  • Small for its screen size
  • Vivid display
  • Decent battery life

CONS:
  • Blurry webcam
  • Fewer ports

SPECIFICATION
