Things You Should Know Before Buying a Programming Laptop

1Screen Size

The first thing you will want to consider when you narrow down your choices for a programming laptop is the size of the screen. If you’re a digital nomad who moves around a lot, you might want to stay in the 11 “-13” display range to make the trip as comfortable as possible. But if you do most of your work in one place or if you carry a bigger laptop while traveling, you can watch something with a 15-inch screen so you can see more of your code at once. Because a more substantial screen also makes multitasking much more comfortable.

2Operating System

When it comes to the coding and development, Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s macOS are the most used operating systems for years. The most preferred OS for the programmer’s notebook is – ‘Microsoft Windows’ because it supports most programming languages and also MacBooks are more expensive than Windows laptops, so everyone cannot afford. Linux is also an excellent option for Ruby, Python, on Rails and PHP developers, but Windows also supports them. Thus, Windows is the preferred operating system of all programmers and developers, but for Apple developers, the Mac is a must.

3Memory Capacity

Most laptops today will have at least 4GB of memory installed, and many will have 8GB. For most programming tasks, the need for sufficient RAM is critical. It allows the smooth running of programs behind the scenes without lag. In most programming tasks, the need for RAM is intense. It is expected to work with a high system memory of at least 8 GB for best results.

For beginners in programming and budget buyers, even Intel i3-based laptops will do the job but try to buy an Intel i5 laptop for programming. Whether you are developing a website or a mobile application, you will undoubtedly need a laptop with a powerful processor to run all the demanding programs that you use to code and execute this code. We believe that the laptops shipped with the Intel i5 processor will be enough for most programmers, but if you’re into something intensive like game development or graphics programming, we recommend laptops with a processor. Intel i7.

5Graphics Card

A graphics card is what your laptop uses to handle games and graphics. For maximum programming purposes, the graphics card is not essential. In fact, you should be able to get away with a low-end graphics card. Most newer processors, such as the i5 and i7 processors, have built-in graphics, and while they’re not suitable for dedicated games, they should work well for programming purposes. By going with the onboard graphics, you can use the money you save to get the best processor, which is much more critical for coding. If you need to get a dedicated graphics card, consider something that has one or two gigabytes of video memory.

Apple MacBook Pro 15

The 15.4-inch Retina display offers a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels (220.5 dpi) and a brightness of 500 nits and is both a feast for the eyes and well suited for graphics editing work. And video. At 1.83 kg and measuring only 15.5 mm thick, the MacBook Pro is also incredibly thin and lightweight for a laptop offering high-end performance. The MacBook also has above-average graphical processing for a working laptop, with Intel Iris Pro Graphics, a variation on standard built-in graphics that offers superior graphics capabilities. However, it does not quite match the performance of a dedicated GPU. While the overall graphics performance is much better.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with Apple’s OS X El Capitan, the latest version of the company’s operating system. Included with the operating system is a free software suite that includes Pages, Keynotes, and Numbers (Apple’s competitors to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), along with some reasonably robust audio and video editing tools. The current iteration of the MacBook Pro 15 is characterized by Apple’s iconic aluminum unibody construction, with clean, minimalist lines adorned only with a glossy white Apple logo on the lid. The design measures 14.13 x 9.73 x 0.71 inches, which makes it slimmer than most other professional notebooks, although it weighs the heaviest in our review at 4.49 pounds. With over nine hours of battery life, he is also ready to hit the road, even if the weight can be a bit of a drag. The laptop has a backlit chiclet-style keyboard and features Apple’s Force Touch trackpad, which has pressure sensitivity in addition to multitouch and gesture support.

The laptop implemented with two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, an integrated SD card slot, and two Thunderbolt 2 ports. For wireless connectivity, the notebook has both 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina is one of the best laptops on the market, at home and in the office. Features such as Thunderbolt 2 connectivity and the Force Touch trackpad can draw a lot of attention, but the real benefit lies in advanced performance and robust graphics options, as well as high-end design and high-resolution display.

Dell XPS 15

Dell XPS 15 is a badass laptop when it comes to portability and performance. Being a 15-inch laptop, it is smaller and lighter, thanks to its infinite touchscreen without bezel and its carbon fiber design. The screen of this laptop has a quadruple HD resolution that produces bright, well saturated and beautiful colors. As this is a variation of the touch screen, the Matte coating is not displayed, but if you do not want a touchscreen, you can also opt for a non-touch Dell XPS 15. The keyboard of this laptop is also perfect for programmers. This is a backlit keyboard with 1.5mm displacement keys, giving you a good code typing experience.

It features an Intel Core i7 kaby lake processor and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, making it a perfect laptop for experienced users like game developers and graphics programmers. Microsoft Surface Book

The Microsoft Surface Book brings together high-end components, including new Intel processors and optional Nvidia graphics, in a sleek, slim package. Some parts and most of the battery are hidden in the base, so half of the tablet is lighter. The high-resolution screen looks fantastic, and the stylus included is excellent. More recently, Microsoft launched its all-new Surface Laptop, which is now the most cost-effective way to integrate Microsoft’s portable ecosystem. With a soft-touch fabric keyboard tray and an attractive design to start with a large one, it looks very tempting.

The keyboard houses the most exciting feature of the Surface Book: an optional secondary NVIDIA GeForce GPU. The GPU activates when the tablet section is docked to the keyboard and, in theory, dramatically improves performance. The sleek dimensions and abundant connectivity options mean that the Surface Book is premium and, in my mind, one of the most beautiful convertibles on the market. For comparison, the Surface Book’s backlit keyboard is all-metal and looks more like the Asus Transformer Books docks than the old Cover Type. The keyboard is a definite improvement and offers a much-improved typing experience. Microsoft has increased the size of the Surface Book’s PixelSense screen to 13.3 inches, making it more than an inch larger than the Surface Pro 4.

Processor 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 or i7
Graphics Surface Book: i5: Intel® HD graphics 520; i5/i7: NVIDIA® GeForce® dGPU with 1GB GDDR5 memory

It features a 13.3-inch retina screen with anti-reflective coating and impressive viewing angles, and it also has a backlit keyboard that is even better in its segment. On the hardware side, this laptop is powered by a dual-core Intel i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD storage. This laptop has 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 Thunderbolt 2 port and a built-in card reader that makes it a complete package for coding and media consumption. Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK

The 15.6-inch display of the Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS comes with all the features: IPS display (superior to TN panels for color and viewing angles), anti-glare processing and resolution FHD (1920×1080). Touch isn’t supported, but for games, such a display should be very correct at least. A 1280 × 720 webcam allows you to shoot some videos or chat with your friends on Skype, with Waves Maxx Audio Pro for clear audio output. The keyboard is backlit with a white light, which is a red light walk in most gaming notebooks. Not all laptops in this category understand backlighting, but it’s usually a feature interesting. The keys themselves are of best quality, but with a keyboard shortcut instead. The touchpad has a feeling of softness and robustness, although its positioning is slightly shifted to the left.

You have no excuse to complain about not finding more money than the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor from the Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS, 8GB of memory and 4GB of GeForce GTX 1050 from Nvidia at a price. It’s the first choice for overall productivity and multitasking, with more than enough gaming prowess. The Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS comes with three USB 3.0 ports, the HDMI output is also present, even if DisplayPort is missing, which is a drawback, and could disturb some hardcore players. The optical drive is not something you will find here either; If you need to install games from discs, you’d better get an external DVD drive. Wireless connectivity comes via 802.11 A / C + Bluetooth 4.2 adapter; Wired connectivity is provided via an RJ-45 port. Criticism has been directed towards TN display, however, with users noting that it suffers from poor viewing angles and the color reproduction compared to the more high-end IPS displays. It also comes with useless bloatware and the quality of the speakers leaves a lot to be desired. Finally, some have noted that he feels somewhat fragile. For the price, you get excellent material that leads to a truly admirable performance, but TN panel and build quality can leave something to be desired for many users.

HP ENVY x360

The Envy x360 is HP’s 15-inch convertible laptop, which sits beneath the Specter x360, available in sizes 15 and 13 inches. As a convertible, it has a 360-degree hinge that allows you to use it in different modes, such as a tablet, a tent, a stand or just a standard laptop. It is sometimes convenient to have convertible features, but at this size, using the system as a tablet is a bit difficult, so you will probably stay in notebook mode for the most part. Regarding connections, the Envy x360 houses a USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI connector, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The power button and volume rocker are located on the left side of the unit, making them easy to use in tablet mode.

The 15.6-inch IPS 1080p LCD touchscreen is typical, and there is a standard range of configurable hardware: 8GB to 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB to 1TB SSD plus 1TB of hard drives and a relatively small battery 55.8 Wh. The processor, in the AMD model at least, is a Ryzen 5 2500U without additional discrete graphics. The keyboard, on paper, should be decent, presenting great touches of chiclet-style easy to find. They are also backlit, so the key you are looking for is much more comfortable in low light. The life of the battery is very respectable for a laptop of this size and price, and it should not be a problem for all, but the heaviest of users.

Processor 1.7GHz 4th generation Intel Core i5-4210U Processor with SC Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz
Graphics Intel HD graphics 4400 with up to 1792MB total graphics memory

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW

Laptops For Programming

In the 15-inch ZenBook Pro, Asus takes a simple, almost majestic approach to design. The machine has a full aluminum frame topped by the company’s signature concentric ring on the metallic gray lid, with subtle and polished edges on the sides. While the ZenBook Pro’s lid and palm rest have a little more flexibility than other aluminum models, like the 15-inch MacBook Pro, this is not enough to worry, and the UX501VW is pretty stable. The ZenBook Pro measures 383 x 255 x 20.6 mm and weighs 2.27 kg with the battery. This is slightly more than the MacBook Pro and more than enough to overwrite Microsoft Surface Book.

With a 3.840 x 2.160-inch 15.6-inch display, you get a four-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor capable of boosting up to 3.5 GHz, a high-speed 512 GB PCI-E SSD and 12 GB of RAM. A powerful, dedicated graphics chipset is also included as a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, which means that the UX501VW should be able to handle any task – job or game – that you throw at it. On the right side of the laptop are two USB 3 ports and a card reader, with a headset combination. On the left, you will find a second USB 3 port, and an HDMI 1.4 port – which can drive an extra external 4K monitor screen, but only at a jerky 30 Hz – and a sophisticated Type-C USB port. It works with Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 devices and displays and will be especially useful if you want to connect your laptop to a Thunderbolt docking station.

Acer Predator 17

The Acer Predator 17 X is not the most attractive gaming laptop I’ve ever seen, but something about its tank-like chassis speaks to me. Much of my affinity comes from the fact that all the material is wrapped in the matte black plastic. The Acer Predator 17 is available in an alternative format different prices, including a new er model with an Intel Kaby Lake processor (Core i7-7700HQ), a larger SSD, a 4K QHD display, or a smaller 15-inch display. Its plastic case measures 16.65 x 12.66 x 1.56 inches and weighs just over 9 pounds. While notebooks of this size are not designed for use on campus or cross-country travel, the size and weight of the larger Predator will allow you to leave it plugged into a desk. A disadvantage of the plastic chassis is that it is a fingerprint magnet.

This Predator 17 X has a significant impact, thanks to its four speakers and two subwoofers, which are part of Acer’s SoundPound 4.2 system. Kendrick Lamar’s bass on “HUMBLE” has permeated my average test space without stifling Kendrick’s casual flow. It’s not mechanical, but I’m still a fan of the Predator 17 X island-style keyboard. The colorful, backlit keys offer an elastic clarity that feels good. The laptop also has a row of programmable macro keys on the left side, with a button that allows you to select the four separate profiles, which turns five keys into 20.

Processor Intel Core i7 (6th Gen) 6700HQ / 2.6 GHz

LG Gram

When you think of LG, you probably do not think about laptops. The company has maintained its efforts in the relatively conservative space, limited to a single line of computers: Gram. LG has now updated the entire range to 8th generation Intel processors, in addition to including “Gram” in its branding. If you want a 15-inch screen laptop from a device you hardly feel in your backpack, then the LG Gram 15 is a great bet. Just be aware that other more versatile options do more for less.

LG wants you to see his laptops and think about the Gram brand, not LG. The look of these new Grams is not so different from the previous Grams, but LG has swapped its corporate logo on the lid for a Gram badge. It was a great decision to score differently – we want LG to go a step further by making Gram stand out. It has a conventional appearance, simple lines, and edges, a dark silver shade like the MacBook Pro’s “gray space” color scheme, and a slightly textured, fully magnetized, nano-carbon metal alloy body. We like the hinge on Gram 15, which is loose enough to open with one finger. At just 2.4 pounds, it might not be as light as a gram, but it’s the lightest 15-inch laptop we’ve ever used. For reference, the 15-inch MacBook Pro weighs just over 4 pounds, and the 15-inch Surface Book 2 is 4.2 pounds. The only 15-inch notebook that is getting closer is the 15-inch Samsung Notebook 9, which comes at 2.76 pounds.

The LG Gram comes with a sound tray of port options. What you get is the three USB-A ports, an HDMI, a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C, a microSD slot, and a Kensington lock. You have something for everyone.

Dell Inspiron 13

The Dell Inspiron series is designed for home or personal use. The Dell Inspiron 13, 7000, 2-in-1 is a 360 ° hinge design, an FHD touchscreen, with the latest Intel Core i5-8250U or i7-8550U 8th generation processor. The Dell Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 comes with a choice of i5-8250U or i7-8550U processors, 8 or 16 GB of RAM (max 32 GB), SSD 256 or 512 GB and Windows 10 Home. Open the lid/screen, and it comes alive with a 1920 x 1080 quality LED backlight IPS to display with excellent color and contrast.

Unfortunately, the flip side of this flexibility is that 2-in-1 sometimes seems a little bigger than it should be. At 1.45 kg, it’s not necessarily the heaviest laptop on the market, but it’s relatively heavy for a 13.3-inch notebook. The Inspiron 13 7373 has a sleek silver aluminum design, with chrome accents, like the Dell logo centered on the lid. There is no flex in the keyboard deck or if you enter the corners of the screen, even if the screen flickers a bit in Portable or Stand mode. The aluminum chassis feels sturdy and durable, capable of taking a few hits. When I pressed the keyboard tray using both hands, at one point, even putting all my weight on it, I did not hear a lot of crunches or noticed flex. The hinges are quite flexible.
